Burley Bee Bike Trailer Review

The Burley Honey Bee is manufactured by a company that was founded in 1978 in Eugene, Oregon that was run as a cooperative until 2006. This idealistic company has pioneered bike trailer design and the Burley Bee Bike Trailer is a widely owned and popular consumer model.  While you may find the Burley Bee at your local bike dealer, after searching around a bit I think you can’t go wrong with Amazon because they offer a competitive price with free shipping and an excellent return policy.

What are the Features of the Burley Bee Bike Trailer?

The Burley Honey Bee can fit one or two kids, with a 100 pound maximum capacity and it is relatively light, clocking in at 25 pounds. The bike trailer has padded, suspended sling seats with a support strap under the seat that provides some separation. With hammock style seats it can be a snug ride if your children are on the larger side.

Your little ones will fit securely in the Burley Honey Bee with the 5-point safety harness, which fastens easily. The cabin features an interior pocket with a spot for a water bottle and there is additional cargo space for diaper bags, groceries, tools etc.

There is also a helmet pocket in the cabin, which is a space between the top of the seat and the top of the bike trailer that is intended to give your child more headroom when they are wearing a helmet. This is a subtle, yet important feature because sometimes wearing a helmet can be an uncomfortable ride without the helmet pocket. Leave the sunblock at  home because The Burley Bee Bike Trailer has clear windows and a UV inhibitor. There is a front flap and a mesh door that folds down that will adequately protect your child from the bad elements.

The Burley Bee Bike Trailer Hardware

The Burley Bee Bike Trailer comes with a universal hitch with a swivel feature that is intelligently designed to transfer minimal movement from the bike to the trailer. As a result, the bike trailer can navigate turns effortlessly and if your bike falls down, the bike trailer won’t fall with it. The hitch attaches to the bolt on your bike’s rear wheel and is it easy to assemble.

Setting up the Burley Bee Bike Trailer out of the box is a breeze and there is a fast action folding system to break it down with a quick release mechanism for a 20” wheels. There are nylon locking bolts on most components, so you will rarely need to adjust your bike trailer. When the Burley Bee is stationary,  you can engage a parking brake so it won’t role off with your precious cargo.

The Burley Bee Bike Trailer has adjustable handle bars so mom and dad can take turns pushing the stroller. The wheels have a guard to protect your tires in the event you take the bike trailer off road. There is also a little flag that while being a safety feature, is really cute as well.

Not Every Bike Trailer is Perfect

While the overwhelming number of customers are satisfied with the Burley Bee Bike Trailer, there are a few gripes that are worth mentioning.  This bike trailer does not have shock absorbers, which is pretty common at this price point. If you want to pony up a few more dollars, a the Schwinn Joyrider is a decent alternative. This doesn’t mean your kids will have a bruised bottom by the end of the ride because they hammock seats do a decent job absorbing the bumps.

In order to convert the Burley Bee Bike Trailer into a functioning stroller you need to purchase the conversion set from Burley. If you plan on using the Burley Bee with an infant, its advised to purchase the Burley Baby Snuggler seat. While it is more money, it still may be more economical. With the quality and performance of the Burley Bee Bike Trailer, even with the extra bells and whistles, it is going to cost you less than buying other higher end bike trailer models that are equipped with all the features.
